They estimate 4,800 anesthesia professionals left the workforce in 2022, including 2,500 anesthesiologists, 2,200 nurse anesthetists, and 65 anesthesiologist assistants.

The cooperation between surgeons, anesthesiologists, and internal medicine specialists to develop the protocols has been outstanding, the standardized checklist care has been well accepted, and patients are benefiting. This group would cover a hospital or several hospitals along with nearby surgery centers and offices.

Training our own anesthesiologist assistant students in didactics and clinicals has been a rewarding experience. Toward the end of 2024, our hospital system also navigated the transition to the Epic electronic health record – a familiar challenge I remember going through as a resident.
