Awareness during anesthesia is a rare but profoundly distressing condition that can occur when a patient becomes conscious during surgery and has recall of their surroundings or events related to the operation. This phenomenon, although occurring in a very small fraction of all surgical procedures, poses significant psychological risks, including the development of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
