Today’s inane image of the day: I have been part of planning the American Medical Women’s Association [AMWA] meeting for almost a decade now. Although I’m striking a glamorous pose, take note of how not glamorous this room looks [it’s just a handful of us that unpack pallets of boxes, set up technology, and make the program run…].

Today’s inane image of the day: From my Memorial Day weekend in Austin, TX. Peace out seemed like an appropriate photo for the entry title, no? Oh, hi! It has been a while since I updated here [woah, almost a year?!]. I kept telling myself it was time to write something or record something but the passion just hasn’t been there. A couple weeks back, I actually recorded a video, but I wasn’t excited to edit it.

Approximately 10 million people in the U.S. suffer from osteoporosis, a disease that slows the growth of healthy bone and weakens bones over time. Osteoporosis affects nearly 20% of women aged 50 and over and can increase the risk of a fragility fracture during or after joint replacement surgery , of which falling is the most common cause 1. Greater fragility in the bones of a patient with osteoporosis can complicate orthopedic surgery.
Transitioning to an Electronic Tracking system often involves importing your existing CSSD Check Sheets and Surgical Devices data, currently maintained in MS Word or Excel. A common challenge is the varied naming of the same type of surgical instruments. For instance, Mayo Forceps for example, might be named in several ways: 15cm Curved Mayo Forceps Mayo Forceps 15cm Curved Curved 15cm Mayo Forceps Forceps Mayo Curved 15cm 6" Mayo Curved Forcep Let's explore five tips on establishing a consisten
In ambulatory surgery centers, efficient operating rooms result in optimized schedules, higher patient volume, and streamlined operating processes. Facilities struggling with inefficiencies risk dangerous mistakes and longer operating times which can affect patient outcomes. On the business end, longer surgeries and wider scheduling mean lost potential revenue.
In 1997 the IBM computer Deep Blue beat world chess champion Gary Kasparov head to head. Is it feasible that CHATGPT, this decades artificial intelligence wunderkind, can equal or better a physician anesthesiologist? The association between ethnicity and outcomes in obstetrics is well known, but there has been little published about its relationship with obstetric anaesthetic care. This new national cohort study of women who gave birth between 2011–2021 from Bamber et al. finds differences between ethnic groups in rates of general anaesthesia received by women who had caesarean births and in rates of neuraxial anaesthesia received by women who had vaginal births (Fig. 1).

Once I got the hang of C-Sections I started to really enjoy doing them more & more! I have done 2-3 twin Cesarean Sections & have some helpful notes I can share on them! My first was a surprise because we weren’t told they were having twins, so I had to scramble to figure out what extra supplies/instruments I needed. Here are my notes for a regular C-Section, which is what our surgeons at our hospital prefer.

Title: Unveiling the Origin and History of Anesthesia The use of anesthesia has revolutionized the field of surgery, enabling painless and safe procedures for patients. Have you ever wondered how anesthesia came to be? In this blog we will embark on an abbreviated history of anesthesia. Peripheral venous-arterial (VA) ECMO, typically via the common femoral vein and artery, can be utilized as a bridge to recovery or decision in critically ill patients; however, this cannulation strategy can result in unique physiologic derangements like a watershed phenomenon. In this situation, perfusion occurs via antegrade cardiac output (blood leaving the heart in the usual fashion) and retrograde flow returning from ECMO via the femoral artery.

Anaesthesia Exam Question:1 Revised Cardiac Risk Index (RCRI) is one of the commonly used perioperative risk indices The RCRI determines preoperative risk based on risk of surgery, history of ischemic heart disease, congestive heart failure, cerebrovascular disease, preoperative use of insulin and creatinine greater than 2.0 mg/ dL. The total score ranges from 0 to 6, with higher scores indicating a higher risk of major adverse cardiac events (MACE).
Stroke is a relatively rare but debilitating consequence of surgery [1]. Albeit more common after cardiac surgery, patients who have undergone non-cardiac procedures are also at risk of experiencing stroke [2]. With stroke affecting functions such as vision, movement, and cognitive ability, not to mention carrying the risk of death, the importance of understanding the incidence of stroke after surgery and how best one can prevent it is evident [3].
Cardiac output ( CO ) is mathematically calculated as the product of heart rate and stroke volume. It’s related to preload, afterload, and contractility. One echocardiographic technique I routinely use to estimate a patient’s stroke volume is the volume-time integral ( VTI ). The VTI method is based on the Doppler effect which relates to the perceived change in frequency of sound waves as they reflect off moving objects.

Our amazing educators met in April to support one another, share tips for starting a sterile processing program, and discuss how sterile processing and surgical technology programs can have a mutually beneficial relationship. The word of the day was synergy, since educators reported that the benefits of the two programs working collaboratively were exponentially greater for their constituencies than the benefits of both programs operating in isolation.
