It's interesting to observe a hospital process (or lack thereof) when a family member needs surgery. I had the opportunity to do so one day last week. I originally shared this on LinkedIn as a post and real-time updates. Thankfully, the clinical care seemed to be good, and that family member is recovering well from the outpatient procedure. But, the experience could have been better.

Awareness during anesthesia is a rare but profoundly distressing condition that can occur when a patient becomes conscious during surgery and has recall of their surroundings or events related to the operation. This phenomenon, although occurring in a very small fraction of all surgical procedures, poses significant psychological risks, including the development of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
The potential implications of prenatal exposure to anesthesia have become a topic of significant scientific inquiry and clinical concern. Recent studies suggest a possible association between prenatal anesthesia exposure and an increased risk of behavioral disorders in children, prompting a reevaluation of safety protocols and guidelines in obstetric anesthesia.
In this fluoroscopy clip, one appreciates that attempting to remove a Swan-Ganz catheter results in traction near the cavoatrial junction. Ultimately, the Swan had to be removed through a small right atriotomy revealing that the catheter was trapped by a stitch. It just goes to show that if something isn’t the way it should be, we need to think about possible problems, ask for help, and always do the right thing for the patient.
