The state of Alabama executed inmate Kenneth Smith on January 25, 2024, by forcing him to breathe 100% nitrogen gas. It was the first known execution in the United States by this method. Smith was 58 years old. He was sentenced to death for his role in a 1988 murder. Smith’s lawyers had expressed that death by inhaling nitrogen would cause excessive pain and would be a form of torture.
