The surgeon arrived and attempted to perform an emergency surgical airway, at which time the anesthesiologist successfully intubated the patient’s trachea as the hematoma was drained. In my residency in the 1980s we were trained to do cricothyroid injections of cocaine prior to awake fiberoptic intubation procedures. Not really.
