I had the privilege of working alongside world-class surgeons and surgical teams from across the country. This is the group of scrub techs and nurses that I worked with for the week. It’s just so different than what we’re used to with Dr. H. We are used to doing 17 cataracts in one day or 6 in the afternoon. is VERY quick! He also has way fewer instruments… so it’s a huge adjustment to a new doctor with a different way & a lot more instrumentation to figure out in a short period of time!
A Radical Orchiectomy is a surgicalprocedure for testicular cancer. The surgery is performed when a solid or hard mass is found in the testicle. Removing the testicle allows for examination of the tumor under a microscope. The testicle and spermatic cord are both removed.
Exploratory Laparotomy: An Exploratory Laparotomy is a surgicalprocedure in which a large incision is made in the abdomen to allow the surgeon to examine the organs and tissues inside. As you probably know, I’m bad at explaining things! Depending on the patient’s size, you may have to use the Bookwalter.
A carotid endarterectomy is a procedure where the surgeon makes an incision along the neck and opens up the carotid artery to remove plaque or other debris blocking the blood flow. Once the artery is clear of plaque the surgeon then repairs the artery with a patch that he cuts to size. The basics will be the same, of course.
When a foley is placed, I save my 10mL saline syringe (empty it) & a towel so they can use them at the end of the procedure to remove the foley. One of our surgeons likes the hook cautery with the foot pedal so I do not have to switch the cautery. The other likes the Megadyne cautery so I have to switch the cautery once she’s in.
I’ve been complimented on how far I’ve come as a scrub tech & how well I’m doing. I still use it from time to time. You can download it on your phone & look things up on the spot when needed!! It’s hard to believe that this June will be my 3rd year in the OR! Time flies. My brain works in weird ways.
