The surgical resident and the scrub tech held suction catheters in the abdomen, but the stream of blood bubbled upward past the catheters. He took a scalpel from the scrub tech, and in one long stroke made an incision down the midline of the abdomen from the lower end of the breastbone to the pubic bone. A red sea rose between them.
